Archbishop Murphy secured its third consecutive victory on Tuesday night, defeating Mountlake Terrace 2-0 at Edmonds Stadium. The result snapped the Hawks' undefeated start, marking their first defeat of the season, while the Wildcats improved to a 3-2 overall record and a perfect 2-0 mark in league play.
The game’s decisive moment arrived early in the first half. Following a corner kick that resulted in a high ball drifting toward the penalty area, Archbishop Murphy sophomore Avery Kahn advanced from the backline to challenge for possession. She outmuscled nearby defenders and deflected the ball over the outstretched hands of Mountlake Terrace goalkeeper Jordyn Stokes, who had previously denied two other shots from the Wildcats. Kahn’s chip goal established a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest.
Prior to this matchup, the Wildcats had recovered from an opening two-game losing streak, which included a 2-1 loss to Stanwood and a 6-1 defeat to Cedar Park Christian of Bothell. The recent winning run has placed the team in a tie for the top spot in the Wesco South 3A/2A conference with Shorewood, though the standings remain fluid given the early stage of the schedule.
Archbishop Murphy head coach Terry Ryan attributed the team’s resurgence to both technical ability and mental fortitude. He noted that the squad possesses significant skill and expressed enthusiasm for coaching the group, describing the players as exceptional.
Maintaining the lead, the Wildcats shifted their defensive strategy to disrupt Mountlake Terrace’s forward passes. The Hawks attempted a counter-attack in the 25th minute, with freshman Kyla Johnson heading away a cross from Wildcats junior Julianne Buchan. This allowed senior Taylor Williams and junior Ella Vander Ploeg to push forward, but the effort was neutralized by Archbishop Murphy seniors Sophia Ames and Morgan Burley.
Ames credited the defensive unit’s timing for their success in limiting the Hawks' threats in front of junior goalkeeper Hailey Chae. She explained that the defenders focused on staying close to the quick Mountlake Terrace attackers, waiting for the precise moment to step in and block shots without leaving gaps for teammates to cover.
Both teams exchanged opportunities during the final quarter of the first half. Vander Ploeg broke through a line of defenders at the left post, but her shot was parried for a corner by Chae. On the opposite end, Wildcats junior Laura Anderson collected a loose ball and fired a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.
Chae further solidified the lead with a diving save on a follow-up shot from a Mountlake Terrace corner kick in the 32nd minute, followed by another crucial stop shortly thereafter. With under two minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Adele Millett intercepted a pass from the Hawks' backline and drew a penalty. The resulting free kick was converted by Buchan, extending the Wildcats' advantage to 2-0 at halftime.
Archbishop Murphy’s tactical adjustments in the second half proved decisive against Mountlake Terrace, shifting momentum in favor of the Wildcats. Head coach Anderson noted that the visitors initially increased their intensity early in the period, attempting to force a comeback. However, Murphy switched from a 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1 alignment, which allowed the team to dominate the central area of the field.
The coaching staff identified a numerical disadvantage in the middle as a key factor. While Mountlake Terrace utilized two wide players within its previous formation, the Wildcats’ new setup featured three midfielders. This structural change enabled Murphy’s side to disrupt the opponents’ ball movement and assert greater control over the pace of the match.
From the 55th minute onward, the Wildcats generated sustained offensive pressure. Millett intercepted a possession from the Hawks to initiate a counterattack involving Buchan, while Anderson subsequently attempted a shot that sailed over the goal. Following an Anderson tackle that led to another Buchan drive, the Wildcats secured a free-kick opportunity in the 59th minute.
Goalkeeper Stokes delivered two critical saves to deny Buchan and Anderson, respectively, during the final stretch. Although Archbishop Murphy failed to add to their tally after the break, their consistent threat in the attacking third prevented Mountlake Terrace from mounting an effective response.
Buchan acknowledged that the 2-0 margin provides the team with a sense of assurance. He emphasized that while the lead serves as a strong motivational force, the team remains aware that reversing such a deficit is challenging but not insurmountable.
