More than 30 years after a woman was found dead in her Pierce County residence, a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the killing.
Authorities with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office took a 68-year-old Everett man into custody on April 1, 2026. The arrest, conducted at a care facility where the suspect resided, links him to the 1992 homicide of his estranged wife.
The 1992 Investigation
In November 1992, the estranged wife was located deceased in her bed, with her infant daughter in a nearby crib. At the time of the incident, the couple was in the midst of divorce proceedings and living apart.
The suspect initially advised investigators that the death was likely the result of an accidental overdose, citing the victim's history with painkillers. Consequently, authorities processed the scene as a standard death investigation.
However, subsequent autopsy findings determined that no drugs were present in the victim's system at the time of death. Following this discovery, the classification of the case was changed to homicide.
Despite the upgrade, detectives were unable to proceed with an arrest due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
A Decades-Late Breakthrough
The investigation remained dormant for nearly 34 years until family members provided new information, including statements regarding confessions allegedly made by the suspect.
Detectives reopened the inquiry based on these leads. The renewed investigation uncovered evidence contradicting the suspect's original 1992 account and established the probable cause required for an arrest.
Investigators now assert that the victim died following a violent struggle with her estranged husband.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office addressed the matter in a statement, noting that advancements in technology and investigative methods can facilitate justice even after many years.
The statement further emphasized the dedication of the detectives involved, stating that their diligence and determination allowed the family to finally receive the closure they had sought for a prolonged period.
