Former Bainbridge Island High School Math Teacher Receives Letter of Concern
A former mathematics instructor and debate coach at Bainbridge Island High School has been issued a formal Letter of Concern by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
This action followed a complaint submitted by the Bainbridge Island School District’s superintendent in early September 2023. The complaint centered on non-sexual but inappropriate exchanges between the educator and students during the prior academic year.
The educator, employed under a one-year leave-replacement contract, was the focus of an investigation by OSPI’s Office of Professional Practices. Officials determined he exchanged hundreds of digital messages, mainly with two female students on the debate squad. Most of these communications revolved around debate-related topics and were conducted via a district-sanctioned, monitored platform. However, a subset of the exchanges—sent from personal devices—carried a more informal, peer-like tone.
During an interview with OPP staff, the educator acknowledged discussing personal subjects with students and admitted to having exceeded appropriate professional boundaries.
Resolution Without Disciplinary Action
Although the investigation uncovered conduct falling short of professional standards, OSPI opted against imposing a formal reprimand.
State officials concluded that the misconduct, while notable, did not rise to the level warranting disciplinary sanctions. They determined the Letter of Concern sufficiently addressed the concerns and protected student welfare.
The letter, a non-disciplinary tool, is not subject to appeal by the educator. It may be referenced in future proceedings if comparable issues arise.
Under terms of the agreement finalized on June 30, 2025, the educator committed to avoiding recurrence of the observed behaviors.
