Clallam County Torch Run Scheduled for June 26

A 34-mile relay involving law enforcement personnel and emergency responders is set to traverse Clallam County on Friday, June 26, to support Special Olympics Washington. The 2026 Clallam County Law Enforcement Torch Run will commence at 7 a.m. at Laird’s Corner in Port Angeles.

Participants will carry the “Flame of Hope” along the Olympic Discovery Trail. The route passes through Port Angeles and Sequim before concluding at the 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run serves as a primary grassroots fundraising and awareness initiative for Special Olympics worldwide. Revenue generated through local contributions and the sale of commemorative shirts supports year-round training, athletic competitions, health services, and leadership development for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Clallam County Undersheriff Lorraine Shore, the local coordinator for the Torch Run, stated that the event extends beyond the physical activity of running. Shore noted that the relay is designed to support athletes, foster community partnerships, and raise funds for Special Olympics participants.

Participating Agencies

A coalition of regional agencies will provide runners for the relay. Agencies represented include the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Port Angeles Police Department, Lower Elwha Police Department, Sequim Police Department, and the Jamestown S’Klallam Police Department.

Additional participants will come from the Washington State Department of Corrections, Olympic National Park, Clallam County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, and the Sheriff’s Office Olympic Discovery Trail Bike Patrol Team.

Community Walks

Organizers have scheduled two community walks for members of the public wishing to participate alongside the relay.

The Port Angeles Waterfront Community Walk is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on the Port Angeles Waterfront Trail. Clallam County Sheriff Brian King, Port Angeles Police Chief Brian Smith, Lower Elwha Police Lt. Jimmy Thompson, Special Olympics athletes, and their families will walk this segment.

A second gathering is set for approximately 12:45 p.m. at the intersection of East Fir Street and North Blake Avenue in Sequim. Sequim Police Chief Mike Hill will join athletes and their families to carry the flame through Carrie Blake Park and into Sequim.

Finale Celebration

A celebration is planned for 2 p.m. at the 7 Cedars Casino RV Parking Lot in Blyn. During this event, Clallam County runners will transfer the flame to representatives of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The gathering is open to the public and will include an opportunity to view public safety equipment. Displays will include armored rescue vehicles from the Clallam and Jefferson County Crisis Response Teams, along with fire apparatus from Clallam County Fire District 3. A shaved ice cart will be available for attendees.
