ORCHARDS, Wash. - A man was arrested after a standoff in the Orchards area on Monday, the Clark County Sheriff's Office said, according to KATU.

Aaron Hetland, 48, was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of second-degree malicious mischief, attempt to elude and resisting arrest.

The incident started at about 2:30 p.m., when Hetland's mother called 911 to report that he had damaged property inside the home they share on NE 107th Street in Orchards. He left in a blue Toyota Corolla, then returned to the home at about 3:45 p.m., prompting another 911 call from his mother.

Deputies saw Hetland leaving in the Corolla and tried to pull him over. He drove back to the family's home and parked in the driveway but refused to get out, despite deputies telling him he was under arrest. "Hetland did not comply and instead struck the garage door with his vehicle before backing out of the driveway and eluding CCSO deputies," the sheriff's office said.

Shortly after 5 p.m., deputies found Hetland driving on NE 99th Street and deployed a grappler to stop the car. Once he was stopped, deputies say they saw Hetland using a knife to inflict self-harm.

For more than an hour, deputies and crisis negotiators worked with Hetland to get him to surrender, and he was taken into custody at about 6:20 p.m. After being evaluated for his injuries, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later booked into the Clark County Jail.
