Roundabout Construction Begins Near Sultan This Fall
The Washington State Department of Transportation has scheduled the start of construction for a new roundabout at the U.S. 2 and Old Owen Road junction in Sultan, with work commencing October 5. The agency made the announcement in a Monday press release.
This project is part of a broader safety initiative along a 15-mile stretch of U.S. 2 between Monroe and Gold Bar. In total, roughly a dozen locations along this corridor will receive enhancements, including improved crosswalks, pedestrian signal lights, expanded sidewalks, and added truck aprons alongside the roundabout itself.
The new roundabout will replace an existing signalized intersection that had become a recurring bottleneck for drivers. Altogether, the suite of upgrades is projected to cost $16.7 million, with state funding covering the full amount.
Work on all planned improvements is anticipated to span more than a year, with full completion targeted for the close of 2027. The roundabout itself is expected to open to traffic by late February 2027. To maintain traffic flow during construction, crews will install a temporary bypass lane while the main structure is being built.
When additional work such as sidewalk extensions and road striping begins in 2027, WSDOT expects drivers to encounter periodic single-lane and directional closures, both during daylight hours and overnight.
