Lake Stevens girls soccer secured a 1-0 victory over Arlington on Tuesday at Viking Stadium, capitalizing on a late-second-half breakthrough after a goalless first 40 minutes. The Vikings, who controlled possession for the majority of the match, found their opening in the 49th minute.
The decisive moment came after Arlington shifted its offensive strategy, targeting the wings rather than the center. This tactical adjustment created several near-misses for the visitors, including a deflected shot by a senior forward and a wide attempt by a senior winger in the 48th minute. Capitalizing on the pressure, a sophomore midfielder delivered a precise pass to senior striker Kaysa Banks. Banks utilized her pace to evade two defenders inside the box, mirroring a chance she had narrowly missed in the 35th minute when two Arlington defenders forced her shot wide. This time, Banks finished the run with a successful strike, putting the ball in the net to give Lake Stevens a 1-0 lead.
Banks noted that she focused on staying balanced and keeping her eyes up during the final play. She explained that while she had overthought her technical approach during her earlier missed opportunity, she simply committed to shooting in the winning sequence.
The win improves Lake Stevens’ overall record to 4-2-0 and its league record to 1-0-0. Arlington drops to 3-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.
The Vikings are currently navigating a significant roster transition following the departure of several key players from their 2024 state championship squad, including the previous year’s Wesco 4A Offensive Player of the Year. With few veterans remaining from that title-winning team, head coach Sam Ford is relying heavily on two specific seniors to carry the load while younger players develop.
Although senior Noelani Tupua did not score in the match, she generated numerous scoring chances through her own play and by providing crosses to teammates. Defensively, the back line was held together by senior center back Judith Roehl, who worked alongside sophomore defender Sami Heininger and sophomore goalkeeper Jersie Olsen to limit Arlington’s attacking options.
Coach Ford acknowledged the challenge of finding the team's new identity after losing multiple upper-echelon players. He emphasized that while the focus remains on his two primary contributors, he is pleased that a different player found the goal. Ford stated that the team is still determining its exact shape but is encouraged by the emergence of several younger athletes.
Arlington appeared to have a handle on Lake Stevens’ game plan early in the match, creating enough pressure to threaten for an upset. However, the Eagles were unable to sustain that pressure against the Vikings’ sustained possession for the full 80-minute duration of the game.
Arlington Stays Compact, Holds Off Lake Stevens
Arlington maintained a disciplined defensive shape throughout the first half, limiting Lake Stevens’ opportunities despite the Vikings’ persistent pressure through central zones and flanks. In the 17th minute, Tupua demonstrated refined technique on the left flank to carve out a scoring chance, though Eagles sophomore Taylen Sturm stepped in to intercept the potential follow-up, forcing a corner. The subsequent cross found Roehl at the near post, but her header struck the upright before goalkeeper Ellie Reed intervened decisively to clear the danger.
Later, in the 35th minute, Banks initiated a well-timed vertical push through midfield. Tupua advanced into the penalty area shortly after, but Roehl again rose to the occasion, clearing her wayward effort in the 38th minute.
Coach Nathan Davis emphasized patience as a core strategy. “We aimed to let them build frustration through relentless attacking,” he noted. “Defensively, we stayed organized, and Ellie was excellent in goal, she made smart decisions, encouraging them to take外围 shots rather than press deep, and it paid off.”
While Lake Stevens controlled much of the tempo, Arlington’s structured retreat allowed the Eagles to absorb pressure and reorganize efficiently. Roehl highlighted the team’s focus on ball progression: “We used Jersie in goal to relieve pressure and recycle possession. That helped us settle into the middle third, our strongest area, before pushing forward. We were more deliberate with the ball tonight, relying on those transitions really helped our rhythm.”
At halftime, Lake Stevens remained winless despite extended spells of dominance. Coach Ford urged a more proactive approach after the interval, and Banks responded swiftly, scoring in the 54th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 advantage.
Though chances continued to materialize, converting them proved difficult for the Vikings. “We had good control of the ball, but Arlington kept retreating, and they’ve consistently challenged us,” Ford observed. “They’re always well-prepared. We asked the players to be more decisive, less passive buildup, more direct action, and they responded. Still, finishing was the hurdle. That’s where we’ll focus our attention moving forward.”
The Eagles mounted several surges in the closing stages of the match, with intensified pressure in both the final twenty minutes and the concluding five. Lake Stevens’ defensive unit held firm throughout, repelling each offensive threat. In the 64th minute, Wagester advanced the ball with a sustained dribble past multiple defenders before slipping a pass to senior Kennedy Baggen, who entered the penalty area. Goalkeeper Olsen responded swiftly, charging off his line to intercept the ball with a diving stop. Moments later, a defensive lapse nearly gifted the Vikings an opportunity, but Heininger stepped in during the 75th minute to break up a promising sequence involving sophomore Kinley Koontz, denying her a clear path toward goal.
A one-goal advantage carries significant weight, according to Banks. He noted that in the final stretch, the focus shifts entirely to preserving the lead and avoiding a late equalizer. Roehl echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that sustained offensive pressure demands disciplined, composed defending from the back.
