The New England Patriots’ roster featured a quiet, second-year wide receiver three weeks ago. Efton Chism III, an undrafted free agent out of Monroe, had limited playing time during the 2025 season, appearing in eight games and securing only three catches. That anonymity has since evaporated.
The former Monroe High School standout has rapidly transitioned into a local celebrity following two standout performances. First, he delivered a dramatic, one-handed touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter during a 29-26 win over the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium on Oct. 4. Most recently, he served as the central figure in a complex hook-and-lateral sequence against the Las Vegas Raiders at Gillette Stadium.
These moments have changed how the public interacts with the athlete. Chism recounted an incident at a nearby Hobby Lobby where a customer recognized him, asked for confirmation, and requested a photograph. He also noted that groups of children have begun calling out his name in public.
The sudden fame highlights the impact of his recent on-field success. However, conversations with the player often shift focus to his distinctive first name, which carries significant family legacy.
A Generational Legacy
The name Efton has been present in the family for over a century, tracing back to the birth of Efton Hewitt Chism in 1922. Efton Hewitt’s brother, Neal Chism, fathered Efton Lynn Chism, known as Efton I. Efton I’s son, Efton Chism II, is the father of the current Patriots receiver.
Chism noted that his grandfather, Efton I, passed away in 2025, coinciding with the early stages of the receiver’s professional career. The player described the family’s struggle with his grandfather’s Alzheimer’s disease during that period.
College Success to the Pros
Raised in Monroe, Chism starred in high school before spending four years at Eastern Washington University. During his college tenure, he established numerous school records, including the single-season reception mark, surpassing the previous record held by Cooper Kupp, who currently plays for the Seattle Seahawks.
After going unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft, Chism signed with New England. His rise on the depth chart began during organized team activities in Foxborough in May 2025. Earlier reporting from The Athletic noted that Chism’s performance during that period was instrumental in securing his position on the roster.
For the Patriots, adding receiving depth was a priority to support quarterback Drake Maye. For Chism, his strong start to the offseason provided a sense of optimism before he returned to Monroe for a visit.
A Sequim man reflects on a cherished Patriots cap once belonging to his grandfather, now signed and preserved after a meaningful family moment. The younger Chism recalled how his father had captured an image of the elder Chism wearing the hat, and how he later added his own signature to it. Those small gestures, he noted, became enduring memories, especially since he was able to spend additional time with his grandfather in the months following.
He paused, his voice steady. “That disease is so tough,” he said, reinforcing how challenging it was for his grandfather to grasp the present, even when surrounded by loved ones. Still, the grandfather found clarity in knowing his grandson was pursuing his professional passion with the New England Patriots.
Chism recently returned to Foxborough ahead of training camp, having learned of his grandfather’s passing on June 25. According to public records, the late Efton Lynn Chism, affectionately known as Efton Chism I, lived by a guiding principle: *Actions speak louder than words*. Colleagues and family described him as reserved by nature, yet consistently generous and thoughtful in how he expressed himself. His demeanor was marked by quiet integrity and deep kindness.
Earlier reporting noted a shared experience among families affected by neurodegenerative conditions. One woman, whose spouse lived with dementia, shared how moments of connection could still shine through even in advanced stages. She explained that on certain days, entertainment references, like a favorite film or television program, could spark genuine joy and engagement, sometimes even more vividly than personal relationships.
That dynamic proved especially poignant for the Chism family. As fans approached Efton Chism III to commend him for his role with the Patriots, the deeper resonance lay in the knowledge that Efton Chism I, despite his own health challenges, retained awareness of his grandson’s career. To him, those details weren’t just background noise, they were proof of a legacy unfolding with purpose and pride.
