The Everett Silvertips have largely turned their focus toward the upcoming 2026-27 campaign, with training camp nearing its conclusion and the final roster secured. Nevertheless, the franchise will mark the end of the previous year with a ceremonial banner-raising event prior to their Saturday opening game against the Portland Winterhawks at Angel of the Winds Arena. The ceremony will permanently honor the team’s inaugural Western Hockey League Championship, a milestone achieved last season.
Forward Jaxsin Vaughan expressed enthusiasm regarding the occasion, describing it as a memorable experience that allows players to participate in the franchise's history. He noted that the banner serves as a bridge between the past and present, offering motivation for the current squad to potentially add another to the rafters.
The transition to the new season has been compressed due to the extended schedule of the previous year, which culminated in the Memorial Cup. Everett fell to the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League in the championship final in late May, resulting in a shortened offseason. This timeline, paired with substantial roster changes, has created a significant shift for observers of the team.
Major departures characterized the offseason, with seven of the top nine forwards leaving, including the entire top-six line. The top defensive pairing of Tarin Smith and Landon DuPont also exited the organization. Additionally, the goaltending corps was completely replaced, with Anders Miller and Raiden LeGall moving on to other opportunities.
The new roster features a mix of incoming players and lower-line veterans seeking expanded roles. Returning fourth-liners Hunter Rudolph, Mirco Dufour, and Rhys Jamieson will compete for more ice time alongside high-pick prospects. Reid Nicol, selected fifth overall in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft, produced 63 points in 32 games for the Brandon Wheat Kings U18 AAA team last year. He made six appearances for the Silvertips before rejoining the squad as a healthy scratch during the championship run.
Dario Blengino joined the organization in late June as the sixth overall selection in the CHL Import Draft. The 17-year-old recorded 27 points in 21 games for HC Sparta Praha U17 in the Czech junior league, along with nine points in 19 games for the U20 squad. Silvertips European scout Alessandro Benin highlighted Blengino’s skating ability and two-way play in the draft announcement.
Lukas Kaplan, one of two top-nine forwards returning alongside Vaughan, identified Hunter Rudolph and Henry Meier as players who have shown promise during training camp.
There are numerous positions still in need of filling, and several younger players have recently entered the fold, demonstrating both readiness and adaptability, according to Kaplan. Rudolph has taken initiative, offering consistent vocal leadership while contributing on the ice. Meanwhile, Meier, who lives with Kaplan, has impressed as a promising young teammate.
Jayden Kraus, 20, has been entrusted with the primary goaltending duties. The Silvertips acquired him on July 29 from the Brandon Wheat Kings in a deal that included two future draft selections, third- and sixth-round picks in 2029. Last season, Kraus logged 30 appearances for Brandon, posting an .895 save percentage and a 3.65 goals-against average. Prior to that, he made 72 total outings over two seasons with the Victoria Royals.
To support Kraus, the club finalized a contract on Monday with Bennett Byers, an 18-year-old goaltender who will form the new tandem in net.
Coach Steve Hamilton noted that transitioning to the team’s system poses the steepest learning curve for newer netminders, particularly in areas like puck-handling responsibilities, timing in goalie exchanges, and understanding which elements the team is willing to sacrifice for offensive opportunities. Still, Hamilton emphasized that the adjustments remain modest, and both Kraus and Byers have responded well to the expectations set for them.
Defenseman Bode Laylin, also 18 and right-handed shooting, joins the Silvertips after competing with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL. Selected in the sixth round by the Calgary Flames this past summer, Laylin arrived at camp on Wednesday following a stint at NHL training camp. He values his versatility, skating, decision-making, and ability to initiate plays from the blue line. Laylin viewed Everett as a natural next step, citing the team’s recent success, coaching staff, and organizational stability as key factors in his decision.
With a roster in flux and opportunities emerging across the board, Hamilton anticipates some early growing pains but remains optimistic. The drive and maturity he’s observed in the incoming class suggest strong potential for postseason contention by season’s end in 2026–27.
A symbolic milestone approaches: Saturday’s ceremony to raise last season’s championship banner will serve as both a capstone and a launchpad. Hamilton highlighted a recent surge in season-ticket renewals, noting how fans have expressed how meaningful last year’s run was, not just for the team, but for the broader Everett community.
The occasion offers a natural transition, from honoring the past to building toward the future.
First puck drop is set for 6:05 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday.
