Shorecrest girls soccer secured a decisive 1-0 victory over Edmonds-Woodway on Tuesday evening at Edmonds Stadium, ending an 80-minute scoreless stalemate with a late goal in overtime. The win improves the Scots’ overall record to 11-1-2 and their league standing to 7-1-2, while the Warriors drop to 7-4-3 overall and 6-4-0 in league play.

The match featured intense defensive efforts from both sides, limiting scoring opportunities within the penalty area. Shorecrest’s senior forward, Olivia Taylor, struggled to find the net during regulation despite creating multiple high-quality chances. Edmonds-Woodway’s goalkeeper, Morgan Smith, made two critical saves in the first half by blocking shots from under Taylor’s feet during breakaway situations. Taylor had been managing a hamstring injury recently, which had restricted her playing time in the two previous matches.

Frustration mounted as the first period ended without a goal. During the halftime break before overtime, teammates Kai Johnson and Sophia Tubbs encouraged Taylor to reset her mindset. Johnson noted that Taylor was focusing too heavily on her earlier misses rather than the effort she had put in. Johnson advised her to let those moments go, highlighting that Taylor was playing at a high level and matching the opponents' intensity. Johnson stated that while Taylor may not have realized it in the heat of the game, her peers recognized her as a standout performer.

Empowered by this encouragement, Taylor approached the extra time with renewed focus. She worked the ball deep into Edmonds-Woodway territory to draw a corner kick. Although the initial cross did not find its target, Shorecrest retained control in the final third. Taylor eventually received a pass at the top of the box and struck a shot to the lower left corner, breaking the deadlock just over two minutes into overtime.

Taylor credited her teammates, particularly the captains and Johnson, for helping her mentally reset after the difficult start. She described the post-regulation conversation as essential for allowing her to forget the previous 80 minutes and execute the final play.

This result maintains Shorecrest at the top of the Wesco South 3A/2A standings. Shorewood moved up to second place after defeating Archbishop Murphy 2-0 on the same day, surpassing Edmonds-Woodway. The Warriors had previously beaten the Scots 2-1 on Sept. 24, which remains Shorecrest’s only loss this season. With two regular-season games remaining, the Warriors were in need of points to keep their title hopes alive but failed to replicate their earlier success.

Sudden-death overtime proved a difficult conclusion, according to Edmonds-Woodway coach Kim Plumis. The team required a goal to secure points. Efforts were made to contain the opposing player, but she proved to be a skilled athlete who ultimately executed a successful shot.

Following an earlier defeat in September where the Warriors utilized a 4-3-3 formation, the Scots adjusted their tactical approach for Tuesday to facilitate a more aggressive press. This strategic shift was credited by players with enabling the decisive goal in overtime. Having dropped the previous two encounters against Edmonds-Woodway, including the prior year's District 1 3A winner-to-state consolation match, Shorecrest secured a vital victory.

A persistent and intense rivalry exists between the two schools, according to Scots coach Mindy Dalziel. Matches between them are always highly competitive and nothing is easily earned. The team faced a formidable opponent and prevailed. The Scots coach noted that the league, Wesco South, consistently requires battling against strong teams daily.

The Scots' forward established immediate pressure in the fifth minute, intercepting the ball on the left flank and delivering a cross into the penalty area. One minute later, a long-range attempt struck the goalkeeper's hands and the crossbar before remaining out of the net.

In the ninth minute, a junior from the Warriors sent a shot just over the top left corner, marking their first close opportunity. Shorecrest responded in the 13th minute when a sophomore midfielder played a through ball to a sophomore forward, though that chance also missed the target.

Possession largely alternated between sides during the first half, with each team meeting the other's attacks with physical defense. The opposing formation effectively controls the midfield area, and their defenders are capable of clearing the ball when necessary. The goalkeeper also performed well during the match, as goalkeepers are a pivotal component of the game. The focus remains on finding moments to create success or force turnovers while minimizing errors.

Goalkeeping became a primary factor late in the first half when the Edmonds-Woodway keeper recorded two saves against the Scots' forward. Following a turnover forced by the defense, a through ball was played to the forward, leaving her unmarked in the 18-yard box. The sophomore goalkeeper timed her movement off the line to slide and stop the play, leaving the forward, who was already playing through an injury, appearing shaken.

The Warriors gained momentum in the final minutes of the first half, but the Scots' forward broke away for another opportunity inside the final two minutes. The goalkeeper smothered the ball just outside the six-yard box to keep the score level at halftime.

Shorecrest gained a decisive advantage in the latter stages of the match after a tactical shift implemented at the break proved effective. The first ten minutes of the second period were largely stagnant, with both sides struggling to create significant pressure. Most attacking efforts came from long-range shots, yet the majority missed the target or were comfortably saved by the respective keepers. It was not until overtime that the visitors’ new approach resulted in a breakthrough goal.

Coach Johnson noted that mirroring the opponent’s setup allowed the team to exert superior control. He explained that the substitutions and strategic tweaks made during the intermission enabled the squad to apply intense defensive pressure throughout the second half, a factor that helped secure the result.

The victory arrives at a crucial moment for the program, which has recently navigated a period of significant absences due to injuries and illness, a common challenge in the autumn season. The coaching staff believes the team is emerging from this difficult stretch with increased resilience, positioning them well as the postseason approaches.

Assistant Coach Taylor highlighted how the recent setbacks provided valuable experience for younger players and reserve athletes. He observed that these individuals had the chance to compete in unfamiliar roles, and their strong performances contributed significantly to recent league results, including several vital draws and victories.
