Visual Arts
At the Schack Art Center, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett, an exhibition titled Celebrate! An 18-year legacy of kilnformed glass will run from Oct. 8 through Nov. 7. The opening reception is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 8. The show highlights the work of artists selected through the PAiR program, which has operated for nearly two decades. This initiative has hosted 116 invited artists from the Americas, Europe, and Australia at various creative sites, including Pilchuck Glass School, North Lands Creative, Berlevg in Norway, and Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. The artists engage in self-directed exploration and meditation. The exhibition is curated by a regional art professional and a local curator.
At Gallery North, 401 Main St., Edmonds, a month-long exhibition titled Black Wings and Autumn Leaves is currently on display. The show features work from member artists and explores the aesthetic qualities of the autumn season. As daylight shortens and the landscape changes, the collection presents diverse interpretations of fall colors, textures, and atmospheric moods. Subjects range from birds in flight to shifting foliage and woodland scenes. As an artist-run cooperative, the gallery represents a wide range of local and regional creators working in various media, including painting, photography, jewelry, ceramics, glass, fiber, and mixed media.
A shared reverence for the Pacific Northwest’s natural environment and the transitional mood of fall serves as the unifying thread for a diverse group of local creators. The resulting collection, titled *Black Wings and Autumn Leaves*, spans a wide spectrum of visual styles, moving from vibrant and recognizable imagery to more atmospheric and enigmatic pieces. This group show reflects the unpredictable nature of the season, blending the familiar with the unexpected.
The exhibition will be housed at Gallery North for the entirety of October. The venue invites residents, visitors, collectors, and art enthusiasts to explore the new works by its member artists and celebrate the onset of the autumn season.
As part of the Edmonds Art Walk, the participating creators will be present to engage with attendees. This free public event is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. It offers a chance to view the display, converse directly with the artists, and engage with the downtown creative community.

During the Edmonds Art Walk on October 15, award-winning science writer Roberta Kwok will appear at the Edmonds Bookshop at 6 p.m. to discuss her latest publication, *Lost in Curiosity* (Sourcebooks, 2026).
Kwok’s journalistic work has been published in outlets including *The New York Times*, *NewYorker.com*, *Nature*, *New Scientist*, and *Audubon*. She is a recipient of a Knight Science Journalism fellowship from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and honors from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union. Prior to her writing career, she conducted research in a genetics laboratory at Stanford University. Originally from Canada, she currently resides in the Seattle metropolitan area.
In *Lost in Curiosity*, Kwok examines the reality of scientific inquiry, moving beyond the myth of sudden epiphanies to describe the complex and often disordered process of seeking truth.
Through detailed accounts and unexpected emotional depth, the author portrays the private world of scientists who are deeply committed to uncovering truths about our planet and protecting its remaining natural wonders. The narrative moves from mysterious remnants of ancient life and complex physical theories to the unpredictable habits of creatures in the wild. This work explores the persistent questions that occupy researchers' minds and the unconventional, yet revealing, methods they employ to find answers.
Critical acclaim for the publication has appeared in Science News and the Wall Street Journal, specifically within a feature titled "The Five Best Books on the Human Side of Science" dated August 28, 2026.
A gathering scheduled for Edmonds Bookshop will be provided at no cost, and participation is open to everyone.
