TACOMA, Wash. Tacoma police are investigating two separate armed carjackings reported early Sunday morning, one of them directly across the street from the University of Puget Sound campus, according to FOX 13 Seattle. No arrests have been made in either case.
The first incident happened around 12:40 a.m. off North 14th Street, where an armed suspect pointed a gun at a woman and stole her vehicle, Tacoma police told FOX 13.
Students living near campus said they were shaken by the crime, and some questioned how the university handled its response. Savannah Cobb told FOX 13 that the school's safety email never explicitly said the carjacking happened at gunpoint.
Eli Borgenicht added that while the university announced extra patrols afterward, students living off campus were left wondering what those steps mean for their immediate safety.
Roughly an hour and a half after the first incident, a second carjacking was reported about six miles away near the Salishan neighborhood in East Tacoma. Investigators have not connected the two crimes, and both remain under active investigation.
A University of Puget Sound official told FOX 13 the school is increasing security patrols in and around campus and adding new lighting and cameras. The official said the school's alert focused on community awareness and that students will likely receive an update sometime this week.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about either carjacking to contact the Tacoma Police Department.
