ORCHARDS, Wash. - The Clark County Sheriff's Office has released new video showing deputies using their grappler system to stop a fleeing driver earlier this week, a stop that preceded a lengthy standoff, KATU reported.
The incident started Monday afternoon when law enforcement responded to a home in the Orchards area, where the suspect, 48-year-old Aaron Hetland, allegedly damaged property at the home he shared with his mother.
"When he later returned while his mother was still inside, deputies attempted to take him into custody," the sheriff's office said. "Instead, he drove into the garage door, backed out and took off." Deputies at the scene let him drive off, with one heard saying, "we'll get him."
Just over an hour later, deputies spotted Hetland driving his blue Toyota Corolla along NE 99th Street. They deployed the grappler to stop him, and a brief standoff ensued, according to the report.
After more than an hour of the standoff, Hetland surrendered to deputies. He was taken to a hospital for medical treatment before being booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of second-degree malicious mischief, attempt to elude and resisting arrest.
