A woman passed away while incarcerated at the Lynnwood jail on Sunday afternoon.
Staff discovered her unresponsive in the female housing unit of the Lynnwood Community Justice Center prior to 3 p.m., following routine monitoring, according to a municipal release.
Resuscitation efforts were initiated by correctional officers and continued until South County Fire paramedics reached the scene, though the woman could not be revived, police stated.
She had been booked into custody on Thursday following arrests on charges involving driving under the influence and theft, officials said. The Lynnwood Community Justice Center serves as a misdemeanor-focused detention site and also houses the city’s police department and municipal courtroom, per city records.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiners Office will conduct an autopsy to establish the woman’s underlying cause and classification of death, according to local authorities.
In line with protocol, the Snohomish County Multiple-Agency Response Team (SMART) was notified and reviewed the circumstances. A SMART representative indicated the team opted against launching a deeper review, noting its mandate focuses on incidents involving law enforcement use of force, and that this death did not fall within that scope.
Additionally, the Snohomish County Major Crimes Unit has assumed an independent review of the case, Lynnwood police confirmed.
This remains an evolving situation, with further details expected in subsequent updates.
